Islamic Finance — Halal Banking and Ethical Economics

Learn about Islamic finance principles: prohibition of interest (riba), profit-sharing (mudarabah), joint ventures (musharakah), and ethical investing according to Shariah.

What is Islamic Finance?

Islamic finance is a system of banking and financial activities that operates according to Shariah (Islamic law). The core principle is that all financial transactions must be ethical, fair, and based on real economic activity — not speculation or interest. Islamic finance is one of the fastest-growing sectors in global finance, with assets exceeding $2 trillion worldwide.

The Prohibition of Riba (Interest)

Riba (usury/interest) is strictly prohibited in Islam. The Quran states: "Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten down by Satan into insanity." (Quran 2:275). Islam considers interest exploitative because it allows money to generate money without productive effort or risk-sharing. Instead, profits should be earned through legitimate trade and shared risk.

Islamic Financial Instruments

1) Mudarabah (Profit-sharing): One party provides capital, another provides expertise; profits are shared as agreed, losses are borne by the capital provider. 2) Musharakah (Joint venture): All partners contribute capital and share profits/losses proportionally. 3) Murabahah (Cost-plus sale): The bank buys an asset and sells it to the customer at a markup, with payment in installments. 4) Ijara (Leasing): The bank buys and leases an asset to the customer for a fixed rental fee.

Halal and Haram Earnings

Income from lawful work, business, and trade is encouraged in Islam. Prohibited earnings include: interest-based transactions, gambling, alcohol, pork, weapons manufacturing, and other activities that harm society. The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'The best of earnings is from one's own hands and honest trade.' Islamic finance promotes social justice, fair distribution of wealth, and ethical investment that benefits the community.
